Judge Upholds $213M Hamptons Mansion Verdict Against Ira Rennert

Billionaire investor Ira Rennert failed to persuade a federal judge to throw out a jury verdict finding him liable for looting his now-defunct magnesium company to build one of the country’s most expensive homes, on the east end of Long Island, New York.
U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan on Thursday upheld all but $1 million of a $214 million award against the mining mogul and his holding company Renco Group Inc, and in favor of the trustee for bankrupt Magnesium Corp of America.
Rennert, 81, is worth $6.1 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

The Massive Estate of Billionaire Ira Rennert In The Hamptons

A Manhattan jury in February found Rennert and Renco liable for $118 million to the bankruptcy estate of Magnesium Corp, known as MagCorp, which sought protection from creditors in 2001.
Nathan later added $96 million of interest, calculated at 6 percent a year from 2001, court records show.
In Thursday’s decision, Nathan rejected Rennert’s argument that the jury rendered an improper “compromise” verdict that did not reflect the facts or law they were supposed to consider.
“The court has every confidence that the jurors undertook their task with fidelity to the court’s instructions,” the judge wrote.

Nathan did throw out a $1 million punitive damages award because it was not available under applicable Delaware law, and also dismissed an unjust enrichment claim. She dismissed family trusts set up by Rennert from the case because that was the only claim on which they were found liable.
Renco and Rennert are expected to appeal.
“A jury ruled MagCorp was solvent in every legal sense and that Mr. Rennert acted in good faith,” Renco said in a statement. “The finding of liability is so obviously inconsistent with the jury’s own ruling on the facts.”
Lee Buchwald, the Magnesium Corp trustee, had sought 9 percent interest, and an overall award of nearly $700 million to help repay creditors.
His lawyers had argued at trial that Rennert diverted money from Magnesium Corp to help fund construction of his 43,000-square-foot mansion with 21 bedrooms and 18 bathrooms on 65 oceanfront acres in Sagaponack, New York.
As of June 29, that property was valued at $248.5 million, according to the Town of Southampton assessment roll.

Six years after billionaire and Detroit Pistons owner Bill Davidson died, the IRS said his estate still owed them $388 million because the estate was "undervalued" at the time of his death.
Here is the house in Bloomfield Hills, MI. in which he was living in at the time of his death. The contemporary brick home was built in 2004, has over 25,000 square feet of space, 7 bedrooms, 8.5 bathrooms, and 7 parking stalls. It sits on a 9.8 acre lot, and is estimated at around $12 million. See related story below.

How To Become A Billionaire

How To Become A Billionaire - To the person who asked: Will I become a billionaire if I am determined to be one and put in all the necessary work required?

No.

One of the many qualities that separate self-made billionaires from the rest of us is their ability to ask the right questions.

This is not the right question.

(Which is not to say it’s a bad question. It just won’t get that deep part of your mind working in a way that helps you—mulling it over when you think you’re thinking about something else—sending up flares of insight.)

You’re determined. So what? You haven’t been racing naked through shark-infested waters yet. Will you be just as determined when you wash up on some deserted island, disoriented and bloody and ragged and beaten and staring into the horizon with no sign of rescue?

We live in a culture that celebrates determination and hard work, but let me stress: these are the qualities that keep you in the game after most everybody else has left, or until somebody bigger and stronger picks you up and hurls you back out to sea. Determination and hard work are necessary, yes, but they are the minimum requirements. As in: the bare minimum.

A lot of people work extremely hard and through no fault of their own—bad luck, the wrong environment, unfortunate circumstances—struggle to survive.

How can you *leverage* your time and your work?

MultiMillionaire Bruce Cahill's House In Laguna Beach, California

Shift your focus away from what you want (a billion dollars) and get deeply, intensely curious about what the world wants and needs. Ask yourself what it is that you have the potential to bring to the world that is so unique and compelling and helpful that no computer could replace it, no one could outsource it, no one could steal your product and make it better and then club you into oblivion (not literally). Then develop that potential. Choose one thing and become a master of it.  Choose a second thing and become a master of that.  When you become a master of two worlds (say, engineering and business), you can bring them together in a way that will A) introduce hot ideas to each other, so they can have idea sex and make idea babies that no one has seen before and B) create a competitive advantage for you because you can move between these worlds, speak their languages, connect the tribes, mash up the elements to spark creative insight until you wake up with the epiphany that changes your life.

The world doesn’t throw a billion dollars at a person because the person wants it or works so hard they feel they deserve it. (The world does not care what you want or deserve.) The world gives you money in exchange for something perceived to be of equal or greater value: something that transforms an aspect of the culture, reworks a familiar story or introduces a new one, alters the way people think about the category and make use of it in daily life. There is no roadmap, no blueprint for this; a lot of people will give you a lot of advice, and most of it will be bad, and a lot of it will be good and sound but you’ll have to figure out how it doesn’t apply to you because you’re coming from an unexpected angle. And you’ll be doing it alone, until you develop the charisma a and credibility to attract the talent you need to come with you.

Have courage. (You will need it.)

And good luck. (You’ll need that, too.)

Hurun Report Releases Its Annual Global Rich List 2015

Chinese Entrepreneurship Website Hurun Report Releases Its 4th Annual Global Rich List 2015, a ranking of the US dollar billionaires currently found in the world. Wealth calculations are a snapshot of earnings as of January 17, 2015. According to the report, the number of billionaires in the world grew by 222 in 2014, bringing the total to a record 2,089. Billionaire Mailing List uses the Forbes and Bloomberg Rich Lists, and we are currently waiting for the release of the Forbes Rich List to release our newest list. Until then we have decided to show you the Top 10 according to the Hurun Report.
The three richest men in the world — Bill Gates, Carlos Slim and Warren Buffett — now have a combined $244 billion, up $52 billion over the past year, or about $100,000 a minute, said the report, which is an annual list of the world's richest individuals. Gates is the richest with $85 billion, up 25 percent over the past year. Slim is just behind with $83 billion, up 38 percent, and Buffett is third with $76 billion, up 19 percent.
But not all billionaires were as fortunate. Of the 2,089 billionaires in the world, 869 saw their wealth decrease while 649 saw increases, said the China-based report. In total, the world's billionaires saw their wealth drop by 1.5 percent to $6.7 trillion. That's still more than the combined GDPs of Japan and South Korea. Here's a breakdown;
1. Bill Gates, 59, retains the number 1 spot with a fortune of US $85 billion, up $17 billion, on the back of strong gains on his investments. Interestingly, one quarter of his wealth is parked with Warren Buffett, exceeding the value of his remaining stake in Microsoft. Other investments include $3.5 billion in Facebook, owned by Mark Zuckerberg also in the Top 10, and close to $2 billion in the Four Seasons hotel chain, majority owned by Prince Alwaleed, one of the Top 20. Gates became a billionaire by the age of 31. Despite being one of the biggest philanthropists in the world, Gates has been in the Top 3 of the Hurun Global Rich List since its inception four years ago.
2. Carlos Slim Helu, 75, regains his second spot with a 38% surge in his fortune to $83 billion. Interestingly, Slim is said to like to drive himself and has lived in the same six-bedroom house for the past 40 years. Slim has six children.
3. Warren Buffett, 84, saw his wealth shoot up by $12 billion or 19%. Buffett donated $2.8 billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation last year. Interestingly, 99 percent of his wealth was earned after his 50th birthday. His children, Susan, Howard and Peter, run their own charity foundations. “I would say the most satisfying thing is watching my children pick up on their own interests," Buffett said, "and work many more hours per week, than most people that have jobs, while trying to intelligently give away the money in fields that they particularly care about."
4. Amancio Ortega, 78, is out of the top three for the first time in three years, after seeing his stake in Zara drop by $7 billion, due in part to a drop in the Euro. Ortega has three children.
5. Larry Ellison, 70, with $54 billion, saw his wealth increase by 13%. Ellison is a signatory of The Giving Pledge, committing to donate more than half his wealth to philanthropic causes. Ellison is best-known for his passion for the sea, racing in the America’s Cup owning one of the biggest yachts in the world and in 2012 buying one of Hawaii’s largest islands. Interesting note; Steve Jobs was the official photographer at Ellison’s wedding.
6. Bernard Arnault, 65, stays at sixth with $45 billion. Arnault has five children from two marriages.
7. Mark Zuckerberg, at 30 is the youngest member of the Top 10, and has had a great year. His wealth soared 42%, moving him up 11 places to #7. In October, Zuckerberg surprised many with the quality of his spoken Chinese during a visit to Tsinghua University in China. Zuckerberg graduated from one of America’s best-known private high schools, Phillips Exeter Academy.  Zuckerberg has donated $2 billion this year. Five Facebook billionaires made the Hurun List.
8. Dieter Schwarz, 75, saw his wealth shoot up 29% to $36 billion and won him a place in the Top 10 for the first time. Schwarz inherited the supermarket chain Lidl and the hypermarket chain Kaufland from his father, but has since grown them significantly. Schwarz is known to be very low-key.
9 & 10. Charles, 79, and David Koch, 74, go up one place despite their wealth remaining the same at $36 billion.
For other interesting facts and breakdowns such as Top under 30, Top oldest billionaires, etc. see their site below.
The United States answer to this list will be released soon and of course you can find it at Billionaire Mailing List.
